If you have gatherings often, or you live with enjoys chicken wings, you will likely find hot sauce on the carpet. The red color of hot sauce comes from peppers, not tomatoes, as commonly believed.

You may feel your face turn red to match the color, but luckily, you can remove it with the right techniques. Clean the hot sauce stain by following this guide.

Prepare to Remove the Hot Sauce

To remove the hot sauce stain, gather:

  • white paper towels or cloths
  • dull knife or other dull tool
  • white vinegar
  • corn starch
  • non-bleaching liquid dish soap
  • ammonia (optional)
  • spray bottle

Read your carpet label to determine what cleaning methods are safe. Test all cleaners on a hidden part of the carpet to check color reaction.

For dried spills, use dull knife or another dull tool to scoop up as much of the sauce a possible. Discard the remnants in a small container.

Blot the Stain

Blot fresh or dried stains with a white paper towel or cloth folded in quarters, but avoid rubbing the stain, or you will spread it further. Blot from the outside of the stain.. Don't use colored cloths or paper towels, since they may leave dyes on the carpet.

Apply more pressure by standing on the paper towel, changing to the clean side of the paper towel. Sprinkle some corn starch on spots that remain, and let it stand twenty minutes.

Rinse the solution using a clean damp paper towel or cloth,  then vacuum and let ti dry. To speed drying, lay a clean paper towel over the spot, and place a heavy object on it. Repeat the process until all of the stain has been removed.

Apply Vinegar or Dish Soap

If blotting doesn't remove all of the stain, fill a spray bottle with half water and half vinegar. Lay a clean paper towel or cloth on the spot, then stand on it a minute or two, or blot.

The stain should lighten gradually as you repeat the steps. Use a clean cloth or paper towel to rinse the cleaner.

Fold the towel to the clean side, and repeat as needed. Alternately, combine a drop of dishing liquid in warm water, and apply the same process.

Clean with Ammonia

If all else fails to remove the stain with ammonia, Keep a window raised when you work with ammonia.

Mix a tablespoon of ammonia in two cups of warm water. Blot and rinse the stain as usual. Don't apply vinegar and ammonia right after the other, since one will camel out the other. Ensure one is compliantly removed before applying the other.
