If you have carpet in your house, you need to know how to get stains out of your carpet when they occur in order to save and protect your carpet. Knowing the right strategies to get stains out of your carpet will help you keep your carpets looking great for years.

#1 Get to Work Straight Away

When you or someone in your family drops something on the carpet, get to work straight away cleaning it up. The sooner you clean up whatever was dropped on the carpet, the greater the chance is that you will be able to remove the item without being left with a permanent stain.

If you have kids, make sure that they know that if they drop something on the carpet, they can tell you. Let your kids know that they should be careful, but if they clean things up right away, dropping something isn't a big deal.  You don't want your kids hiding stains because they are afraid you'll be mad at them or they will get in trouble.

#2 Don't Scrub at The Stain

When you clean up a spill, do not scrub at the stain. Scrubbing at the stain generally only succeeds in pushing the stain further into the carpet fibers, making to tougher to remove. Blotting involves gently touching the stain and pulling the towel or fabric away quickly, picking up little bits of moisture at a time while avoiding pushing the moisture and the stain further into the carpet.

#3 Limit The Amount of Cleaning Product You Use

It can be tempting to pile on the cleaning products when trying to get rid of a stain. However, you should use the minimum amount of cleaning products necessary to get rid of the stain. Cleaning products can sometimes change and alter the color of your carpet. You also don't want to saturate the area with moisture; too much moisture can lead to mold and mildew. You don't want to create another problem while trying to clean up one issue.

#4 Don't Forget to Dry the Area

Finally, after you clean up a stain, be sure to dry the area. You can pat the area dry with a towel, use a vacuum cleaner to dry the area or use a wet/dry shop vacuum to suck up the moisture and clean the area.

When it comes to keeping your carpet clean, the best thing you can do is treat a stain as soon as you spot it without delay. After that, make sure that your blot and don't rub as that can set the stain in your carpet. Use as little cleaning product as possible so that you don't soak your carpet and be sure to dry the area after you are done.
