Patience and understanding are key if you have brought a puppy into your home. Not only are these traits necessary for protecting their health and wellness, but they are also important to have during the potty-training process. Some puppies are able to learn quickly while it can take others many months before they are completely trained to use the bathroom outdoors. During this time, accidents will most likely happen, affecting your flooring, but cleaning up these accidents is possible. If you have brought a puppy into your home, be sure to have the following items on hand to ensure an effective and efficient clean-up.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is one of the most important ingredients you should have on hand for eco-friendly cleaning. In addition to having antibacterial agents that kill harmful bacteria, white vinegar's acidic properties are strong enough to eat through stubborn residue and stains. Therefore, it is an effective option for cleaning pet stains from your carpet.

If you are cleaning up feces, use a paper towel or tissue to remove any bulk matter first. Then, spray a generous amount of white vinegar onto a clean cloth. Use the cloth to blot the stain on your carpet. Do not rub the stain with the cloth, since this will cause the stain to spread and seep further into the carpet fibers.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is another key item to have on hand while potty-training your puppy. The sodium bicarbonate that makes up baking soda can remove both stains and odors without the use of chemicals that may be toxic to your indoor air, children, and pets.

There are a few ways you can use baking soda to treat pet stains. After your puppy urinates, sprinkle a cup of baking soda onto the soiled areas of your carpet. Allow the baking soda to sit and soak up the urine.

If the urine or feces have stained the carpet, a more involved cleanser containing baking soda can be used. In a spray bottle, combine 2 cups of warm water with ½ cup of baking soda. Shake the bottle, which will ensure the baking soda dissolves into the water completely.

Spray the stain, soaking the carpet with the baking soda solution. Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the solution deep into the carpet fibers. Allow it to sit and soak the stained carpet for a few minutes before blotting the area with a damp cloth.

The baking soda will absorb debris and stains while deodorizing the carpet. This will not only improve the look of your carpet, but removing the smell will also make it less appealing for your pet to use the bathroom.

Bleach

First and foremost, it is important to remember that bleach should never be used on dark or colored carpets. Because it will bleach, or whiten, colored carpet, you should only use this method on white or cream colored carpets and rugs.

Dab a small amount of bleach diluted in warm water onto a less visible area of your carpet, such as a corner area or a section behind a piece of furniture to test. If the bleach does not lighten your carpet, you can use it to treat a pet stain.

Make sure to use a diluted bleach solution on your stain. Mix 2 cups of warm water with ¼ cup of bleach in a bucket. Soak a cloth in the solution, wring out the excess liquid, and then use to blot the stained area of your carpet.

You can train your puppy, but you must remember that accidents are a part of this training. This guide will prepare you for a quick and effective carpet cleaning while potty-training your puppy.
